The Si24BdTEPITC1-12BSD-50V-20A is a 50V 20A, microprocessor based, closed-loop, Bidirectional, Thermo-Electric, Proportional-Integral (PI) Temperature Controller board that heats and cools a thermal-zone. An efficient high-power H-bridge controls the current (in the 0 to +/- 20A range) to a Peltier type Thermo-Electric (TE) cell (or a bank of cells, connected in parallel), functioning as a bidirectional heat-pump. The word "Bi-directional" implies that no wire reversal is required on the TE cell to accomplish the heating and cooling task. By PI control, we mean that the amount of correction used in the control-loop is proportional to the difference and the Integral of the difference between the set and measured temperature values. In a properly tuned PI controller, the temperature overshoots and oscillations (“hunting”) are limited to approximately + or - 0. 50C. This controller has two operating modes: Program-Mode and Run-Mode. In the “Program-Mode” with Jumper J2 pins open circuited (J2=Open), seven control parameters are interactively selected and saved in nonvolatile memory. In the “Run–Mode”, with Jumper J2 pins short circuited (J2=Short), the board functions as a Bi-directional Temperature-Range Controller as directed by the seven programmed parameters. An onboard microprocessor measures and controls the temperature; monitors the user inputs; and drives a 2 line x 16 character LCD. The temperature is sampled at approximately 1Hz rate and the control-loop/display is updated with the same rate. A small 12-bit digital temperature sensor, Signal’s part number Si24DTsens-12B , (connected to port CN3) is used to measure and control the temperature in the -500C to +1250C range, with 10 C accuracy and with 0.0650 C precision. Because this sensor is digital, it is virtually immune to noise and loading; ideally suited for remote sensing. This sensor uses a unique “1-wire interface” (with parasite power mode) that requires only 2-conductors for reliable remote (typical length of 20 meters) temperature sensing. In the Analog Mode (ModePar=2 or 3), the desired set-temperature is linearly adjusted (in the -250C=0V to +1020C=+5V range, with ½0 C=19.68mV steps) with the Si5Pot1-5k potentiometer (connected to pin I1 of Port CN6). In the Digital Mode (ModePar=0 or 1), the desired set-temperature is adjusted with the Si24PB2-MC3 Up/Down Keys (two Normally-Open Push Buttons, connected to Port k0) in the -500C to +1250C range, with 0.0650 C steps. An LCD port (with 9600 Baud RS232 Interface Standard) is provided for display of the Set and Measured temperature data. The LCD can be ordered from Signal under part number Si14LCD2L16CH-4PC (2-Line by 16-Char display with 12” cable and 4-pin connectors, and with back-light). In addition, a Full-Duplex, 9600 Baud, RS232 Data-Logging Port (on CN5) is also provided. A bicolor LED is used to monitor the TE cell (or load) voltage (Red = Heat, Green = Cold). This board operates with a single unregulated voltage source (12V to 50V range). A small Aluminum Plate (3.3”x4.0”x0.065”) is required to operate at 1000W power level. Higher power-levels can be achieved with more efficient heat-sinks. Typical applications are: Peltier Effect TE Coolers, Heat Pumps, etc. This board can be configured and programmed to perform efficiently in many customized applications.
